During tonight’s episode, we’ll find out who made the cut — the Top 24.
Seven of the finalists were revealed last night.
Janell Wheeler is the first to be featured in tonight’s episode. She gets the Five of Cups — the card of disappointment. She looks so much like the girl from The Princess Bride … And she’s wearing a micro-mini dress as she makes her way onstage to hear the judges’ verdict.
My husband has noticed that whenever Ellen smiles at the contestants during this final judgment, they go through. Ellen is smiling at Janell. And sure enough, she goes through.
In this light, the Five of Cups doesn’t make a lot of sense, but we’ll wait and see what happens.
Tyler Grady is a 20-year-old ’70s rocker. He likes Robert Plant and Jim Morrison. He gets the Hierophant, the card of the wounded healer. He goes through.
Red-headed Lacey Brown made the Top 50 last year, but she was cut before the Top 24. Tonight she gets the Four of Pentacles — and she goes through.
Oh, now they’re flashing back to one of her songs. She’s good!
Ashley Rodriguez goes through, and Alex Lambert, and Joe Munoz — this is flashing past!
Crystal Bowersox is up now. She’s the blonde with dreadlocks that everyone in this house loves but me. I’m just not a fan of dreadlocks. Yikes! She gets the High Priestess. Is she the New-Agey girl that I predicted could take the whole season? I don’t know much about her yet. Oh, but her name is Crystal, after all. And Ellen is smiling at her.
She goes through … and I could warm up to her, because her baby and her husband are adorable.
Katey Stevens, 17, is the teenager whose grandmother has Alzheimers. Katey gets the Nine of Cups. She’s wearing a little blue jean miniskirt which makes me feel old. I had one like that 20 years ago, and now it’s back in style. Sigh. It’s hard to see the fashions of my youth recycled for a new generation. It makes me feel old. But what about Katey, you ask? She’s going through.
I like how all these contestants ask for permission before they hug the judges. I suppose they don’t want to get hauled off in handcuffs by security.
Simon asks about her grandma, and Katey just shrugs.
Now we see a montage of those who didn’t make it into the final 24. Aww. It’s got to be tough to come so close.
Angela Martin has tried three times to make the grade. The first year she came, her dad was killed. Her daughter has seizures. The second time she auditioned she had to go to jail for a traffic violation; she couldn’t pay the fine, so she was locked up for six days. Maybe this third time will be the charm.
She gets the Page of Swords. That’s been a good card for everyone so far this season.
Kara moves over to sit with her in the judgment chair, and she starts to tell her how hard she’s worked, and then apologizes that she didn’t make the cut. Ellen isn’t smiling … so I guess it’s not good news.
What’s really sad is that there’s no one out in the hall to hug Angela and walk out with her.
We’re back from a commercial break.
Denver’s Lilly Scott has interesting white hair and an even more interesting jazz voice. Lucky girl — she gets the Wheel of Fortune. She’s had her ups and downs; she had a rough rehearsal with the band, but she recovered. She is visibly nervous and shaky. Kara tells her she’s unique. She doesn’t have the biggest voice … but she’s going through to the next round. I hope she brings those peacock earrings! They’re really pretty.
Paige Miles is through, too. And Siobhan Magnus, Michelle Delamor, Jermaine Sellers, and John Park. Bing, bam, boom. They’re not wasting much time announcing this group of finalists.
Now just two girls are left — Haeley Vaughn and Tori Kelly — and they’re both vying for the one remaining girls’ slot. Haeley gets the Seven of Swords — the Thief in the Night.
Tori gets the Eight of Wands, the card of long-distance communication.
Tori doesn’t make it, but Haeley is through to the Top 24.
Now, in the final moments of tonight’s show, we’ll find out which guys will round out the crew. Thaddeus Johnson and Andrew Garcia.
Thaddeus gets the Moon, the card of shadows and cycles.
Andrew gets the Eight of Pentacles, the card of the apprentice.
Thaddeus is the mama’s boy whose mom goes with him everywhere, and Andrew is the guy with the neck tattoo that totally freaks me out.
Simon cuts right to the chase: Thaddeus didn’t make it, and Thaddeus weeps.
My daughter tells me Thaddeus is only 16, so now I don’t judge him so harshly … except … he goes into the bathroom to cry, I mean, collect himself, and his mother follows him! Boundaries, people! Boundaries!
Andrew cries, too, but his are tears of joy. His dad cries, too, when Andrew calls him with the news. I like him. He keeps saying, “My family.” It’s also sweet when he says, “I’m sorry I can’t talk to you guys right now.” He’s crying too much. “I’m usually a cool guy,” he says.
Now the real work begins. Next week’s shows will be live. Before they air, I’ll do readings for the Top 24.
