What can astrology tell us about this year’s season of American Idol?
I ran an astrological chart for the series premiere. Since American Idol is broadcast from California, I used west coast time and Los Angeles’ location for my calculations.
Here are a few of the highlights I noticed:
A Cancer Ascendant. When you look at an astrological chart, you have to imagine that you’re looking at a map of the sky from a specific time and place on earth. The rising sign refers to the stars and planets that will be rising in the east, just as the sun rises every morning. When American Idol premieres at 8 p.m. Eastern Time — which is 5 p.m. in the west — the constellation Cancer will be coming into view over Los Angeles’ eastern horizon.
Cancer is the sign of home and family. American Idol has always been a family-friendly show, but I think this Cancer ascendant — or rising sign — suggests that the 2010 season of American Idol will be even more G-rated than it’s been in the past. Don’t expect another Adam Lambert to rise out of this year’s crop of contestants; his shocking, sexually charged performance at last November’s American Music Awards probably won’t be replicated on the Idol stage.
Don’t be lulled into thinking that the contestants will be meek or mild-mannered, though. Just the opposite is true. Why? Look here:
Mars is in Leo. Mars is the planet of energy and aggression. Leo is the sign of the entertainer. The contestants on this year’s season will be extremely aggressive in their pursuit of the prize. Their competition could even border on the warlike. And because Mars is in the first house, which relates to public image and first impressions, their battles will be very public and very visible. The contestants will be fighting for first place — and they probably won’t seem as friendly with each other as other groups have in the past.
That assessment is further reinforced by the Aries midheaven — the sign at the top of the chart, on the cusp on the tenth house. That’s where astrologers look for information about career goals. Aries was the Greek counterpart to Mars, the Roman god of war. He was a warrior and crusader who thrived on battle, competition, and challenge.
Saturn is in Libra. Saturn is the ringed planet of boundaries, limitations, and restrictions. Libra is the sign of balance and equanimity, symbolized by the scales of justice. Saturn in Libra indicates that the judges — and the voting public — will be conscientious and fair.
The Moon is in Sagittarius. The Moon symbolizes emotions, while Sagittarius is the sign of long-distance travel and the education it brings. The Moon in Sagittarius probably means that this year’s contestants — and this year’s winner — will have a global appeal that extends far beyond America’s borders.
Venus, the Sun, Mercury, and Pluto are in Capricorn. While we all know that American Idol is a vehicle for making money, the fact that four planets are nestled together in Capricorn reminds us of that reality. Capricorn, after all, is the sign of business and finance. Here’s how the four heavenly bodies will affect this season’s shows:
- Venus was the goddess of love. As a planet, Venus symbolizes love and attraction — and in this case, popularity. This is a good sign for the producers and the performers. American Idol will be just as popular in its ninth season as it was in its first.
- The Sun in hard-working Capricorn suggests a high degree of ambition and discipline among the contestants. The Sun symbolizes ego and self-esteem; this year’s contestants will know they’re good, and they will be tireless in their pursuit of the prize. They’re going to look like a herd of mountain goats who can’t be turned away from their goal. It’s actually going to be hard for the judges to choose between a whole group of performers who all think — and act — like they’re each #1. The Sun and Venus, by the way, are conjunct. That’s a feminine combination that could pave the way for a female winner this season.
- Mercury, the messenger of the gods, rules communication. Here the planet is in the meticulous sixth house, which suggests that the contestants will share a methodical approach to learning their lines, mastering their moves, and performing for the crowd.
- Pluto was the god of the Underworld. The planet Pluto represents deep, dark transformation, through long hours of hard work. Expect to see a winner who undergoes a radical physical and emotional transformation as the season progresses.
Neptune in Aquarius. Neptune is the planet of illusion and glamour — especially in the classical sense of the word, which describes the process of casting a spell over an audience. Neptune in Aquarius describes the quintessential “New Ager” — intuitive, spiritual, dreamy, and poetic. If there’s a mesmerizing New-Age girl in the final lineup of contestants — especially if she’s not classically beautiful — I’d say she could be a contender.
Jupiter in Aquarius. Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system, symbolizes growth and expansion. Aquarius is the sign of social groups and causes, as well as technology. It’s possible that more groups will try technological innovations to influence the voting this year — but the fact that the entire chart is balanced on that Saturn in Libra tells me that the show’s producers will make sure that the results won’t be skewed by special interests.
Uranus in Pisces. Uranus is the planet of rebellion and revolution. Pisces is the sign of spiritual awareness. When Uranus is in Pisces — especially when it’s in the ninth house of philosophy and higher thought, as it is here — it suggests a world view that’s unusual, unorthodox, and slanted toward metaphysics. Seriously, where is that eccentric New-Age girl? This chart is made for her.

Interesting. If there *is* a New Age girl in the crop, I’ll be forced to watch the entire series just to see if you’re right instead of just watching the auditions.
I can’t wait to find out if there’s a New-Age girl in the lineup, either. Wouldn’t that be something? For me, reading tarot cards or astrological charts is kind of like reading a novel, where you look for clues along the way and try to guess the ending ahead of time. Of course, this story will take five months to reveal itself.
I’ve been trying to avoid it this year but may have to watch to see if you are right. More G rated? Ugh….
Entertaining webpage. My friends and I were just discussing this the other night. Also your site looks excellent on my old palm treo. And thats rare. Keep it up.
