There’s a new requests feature on this website, so you can submit your own questions about American Idol personalities. This morning, Alexandria Glenwood asked, “Will we see Paula Abdul at all this season?”
While I was shuffling my deck to answer the question, half the cards went spiraling into the air and landed on the floor. Now, I shuffle a lot of cards. I’m good at shuffling. I practice a lot … and I hardly ever drop them. When they go flying out of my hands, it’s significant. There’s even a saying in tarot: What falls to the floor comes to the door. In this case, so many cards wanted to answer this question that I couldn’t pay attention to them all.
I picked the one card that landed face-up on top of all the rest — the Eight of Pentacles.

The Wizards Tarot Eight of Pentacles
The card depicts an apprentice, carving pentacles into stone. He is literally making stars — just as Paula Abdul did during her eight years as a judge on American Idol.
Based on this card, I would suspect that Paula is working on her own TV series — and because we can actually see the apprentice in the card doing the work, I wonder if Paula isn’t developing another reality show, in which we’d see her at work behind the scenes. Her 2007 reality show, Hey Paula, wasn’t a success, but that doesn’t mean she couldn’t revamp the format and try again. If anything, she learned from her apprentice season, and she’d do better on her next attempt. In fact, if this card is an indicator, she could be working on a show in which we’ll see her helping young performers develop their talents.
Of course, Paula is also a jewelry designer, and several of her pieces feature star designs and details. This card might be a literal response to the question. Yes, of course we’ll see Paula Abdul this season — on the Home Shopping Network.
But will we see her on American Idol? The World card suggests that she just might pop in for a special guest appearance.

The World card from the Wizards Tarot
The World card is the last card in the tarot’s “Major Arcana.” That’s the portion of the deck that deals with the great mysteries of life — and the card itself signifies conclusions, celebrations, and preparation for new beginnings.
Paula’s contract negotiations fell through after last season finished taping, so she never did get a chance to say goodbye to the show, or her fans. Based on this card, I really would expect her to make an appearance at some point during this season. She won’t be back for good, but she’ll stop by to say a final, fond farewell, so she can move on to other things.
The show certainly owes it to Paula, and to the audience. I get the sense from looking at the card that both Paula and the producers will be able to let bygones be bygones. I think they’ll be able set their failed contract negotiations aside, because both would benefit by having her on the show. And because the woman in the World card is a dancer — like Paula — I predict that she’ll probably perform during her appearance, too.
