What can we expect from Ellen DeGeneres this season?
The Emmy-winning talk show host is slated to replace Paula Abdul at the judges’ table. She’ll join Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson, and Kara DioGuardi at the end of February, after all of the audition episodes and the Hollywood elimination shows have aired.

The Wizards Tarot Three of Cups
The first card I drew, the Three of Cups, suggests that three of the judges will get along swimmingly. Initially, I thought the card suggested a good fit for Ellen … but something troubled me about the image. Do you see Ellen in that card? No? Me, either. Granted, they’re all wearing skirts, but I see Simon on the left, Randy in the middle, and Kira on the right. There’s no spunky blonde in this picture.

The Sun card from the Wizards Tarot
Rather than second-guess myself, I pulled a second card to find out who will be the odd one out. I thought it would probably be Simon. Isn’t that what we all expect? Ah, but there she is: there’s our sunny blonde Ellen.
This card makes sense. The Sun often represents someone who feels like the center of the universe — and Ellen is used to being the star of her own show. Fitting in with an ensemble panel of three other high-profile judges probably won’t come easily to her.
What’s more, the other three judges have been working together for more than a year. They judged Season 8 together, and they traveled the audition circuit together in preparation for this season — while Ellen stayed behind to do her own show in California. As far as I can tell from the American Idol website, Ellen isn’t part of the Hollywood rounds, either. I think that might be a mistake. She’ll definitely be playing catch-up when the regular competition starts.

The Lovers card from the Wizards Tarot
What will be Ellen’s biggest obstacle to success on the show? Oddly enough, the answer comes to us in the Lovers card — which is normally the card of love and attraction. In this case, however, I’m drawn to the fact that the people in the card are writing, and they’re surrounded by books. I think it’s highly possible that Ellen will start the season by seeming too scripted. She might come in with too many one-liners and jokes that she’s penned in advance.

The Wizards Tarot Knight of Swords
Happily, I think Ellen’s discomfort will only be temporary. Within six weeks of her premiere, I predict that Simon Cowell — shown here as the Knight of Swords – will intervene with a secret, behind-the-scenes meeting in which he’ll encourage Ellen to cut the scripted remarks and fly by the seat of her pants when she’s on air. Believe it or not, Simon will be her staunchest ally and defender. He’ll give her good advice, and help her transition into a more comfortable fit with the rest of the judges.

I like your take on this reading especially the Three of Cups – Ellen being the odd one out – also cups being emotions the three already have that emotional bond from the previous season, the beginning of this new season and also the fact that Paula is gone – that alone could strengthen their bond. I always felt the three judges was a much better fit than the four.
I think The Sun could mean our sunny Ellen will be trying too hard and that could burn her.
I feel The Lovers as an obstacle can also mean a lot of people did love Paula – someone taking her place will be hard for Ellen – it was not easy for Kara coming in last year when people thought she was going to replace Paula – there was not a lot of love.
I do see Simon as a defender.
It will be interesting to see this play out in the coming weeks.
I am not into the Idol show at all but I really find your take on the cards pretty cool……
